Those living in Plano, TX will need no reminding just hot and humid it can get during the summer. Temperatures can rise above one hundred degrees and then some during the hot months. The majority of the community will keep their air conditioners on for days and nights at a time, just to stay cool and safe.
One of our biggest nightmares during the summer is for the air conditioner to break down and need an AC repair. Fortunately, you can rely on the services of One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating of Dallas, we have NATE-trained technicians available around the clock, ready to come to your aid.
Have Your Unit Regularly Serviced to Help Avoid an AC Repair
The best advice is to be faithful to hiring an annual service every year without fail. Routine maintenance will make your air conditioner run more efficiently and use less energy. Any developing problems will be spotted and corrected before any serious AC repair is needed. More importantly, you will have the added security and reassurance of knowing that your unit is less likely to break down and need an AC repair.
What Elements Increase the Risks of an AC Repair?
Your Conditioner Is Over Ten-Years Old
Even if your air conditioner has given you faithful service for many years, it will reach a point where it starts to act up more often and need more repairs to keep going. Even a well looked after unit, will have a useful working life of between ten to fifteen years.
As it gets older it will become less energy-efficient and produce less cool air. If your unit uses Freon (R22) as a coolant you may discover that it is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to source Freon (R22). It is no longer manufactured in the United States and is only sourced by recycling it from old air conditioners.
As your old unit starts to cost more to run, it may be more economical to replace the old air conditioner with a new AC installation. It is important to select the right sized model to best suit the needs of your home and loved ones. It is a bit like Goldilocks, if the new install is underpowered, it will not cool your home down enough, if it is too powerful you may experience short-cycling and it will cut off before it achieves the right level of cooling, and raises your electricity bills.
We at One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating of Dallas are experts in the installation of new air conditioners and are happy to help you through the process of selection and then the installation. One recommendation that we make for every client is to familiarize themselves with the Energy Star program which advises appliances based upon their efficiency, affordability, and environmental friendliness.
Are Your Plano, TX Energy Bills Too High?
As you start to use your air conditioner more during the summer, it should come as no surprise that your energy bills will rise. But if the fees become astronomical, then you definitely have a problem with your unit. Wear and tear will cause components to work harder to provide the same cooling effects, and use up a lot more electricity.
Components that work harder will use more energy and drive up your bills. There is also an increased likelihood that they will overheat, burn out, and need replacing during an AC repair.
Short-Cycling Is Going On
Another widespread problem is short cycling. To obtain the maximum cooling effect from your air conditioner, the compressor needs to work correctly during the cooling cycle for the AC unit.
Normally, the cooling cycle is ten minutes for the compressor to be switched on and another ten minutes where it is switched off. If the compressor is turned off or turned on too quickly you will have a less efficient air conditioner. When the compressor is overworked, it is more likely to break down needing an AC repair.
Frost and Ice Appears on the Evaporator Coils
It may seem like a paradox to see frost and ice appearing on the evaporator coils on a hot summer’s day. But the fact is that the coils need a certain amount of heat to avoid freezing. The heat is provided by the warm air from inside your home, blown over the coils by the fan inside the air conditioner.
If this airflow is restricted in any way, (for example by dirty air filters) it will cause problems with the fan. You will start to see frost and ice forming on the coils. Another reason for the frost and ice forming is that there is not enough coolant in the evaporator coils. Without enough coolant, insufficient heat won’t be absorbed by the coils, and ice and frost will injure your air conditioner.
By allowing the frost and ice to build up, you increase the chance that the evaporator coils will completely freeze over. If this happens your air conditioner will shut down. Typically, the air conditioner will be out of action for at least 24-hours as the evaporator coils thaw out. This is not something you want to happen when the temperatures outside are over one hundred degrees. If the coils freeze over repeatedly you will need an expensive AC repair.
Increased Humidity Level
When the cooling effect is reduced, you will start to notice that the humidity level will begin to rise. Warmer air means higher humidity levels because it contains more moisture than colder air.
You See Water Inside your Air Conditioner
If you see water dripping from your air conditioner you are going to need an AC repair. The problem could be as simple as a loose connection to a water hose, or it could be a faulty drain pan, or the AC drain line may be blocked by dirt, or mold and algae growth.
Once the warm air is cool, the moisture condenses into water in the drain pan and the air conditioner begins to work more efficiently. Should this or the AC drain become blocked, the water will overflow into the air conditioner and eventually onto your floor.
The water could cause an electrical short, resulting in a breakdown and the need for a repair from One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating of Dallas. It will also increase the humidity levels inside your home. The longer you put off fixing your air conditioner, the worse the repair will be and the more expensive it will be to fix.
