We have just come out of the sizzling summer season, and even though it’s starting to get a little cooler it’s still pretty warm here. Your air conditioner plays a vital role in keeping the temperature cool and comfortable inside your home. Temperatures in Flower Mound, TX, will often rise above one hundred degrees. With humidity levels to match, life can get very uncomfortable should your unit decide to break down. You need a specialist AC repair company, which has highly trained technicians on call 24/7, ready to respond to your emergency. You need One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating of Dallas serving the area.
The Best Way To Prevent An AC Repair
We tell all our Flower Mound, TX customers to have their air conditioner regularly serviced, usually during the early spring before the summer season starts. The service will ensure that your unit is running safely, and any minor problems will be dealt with during the service so you will not need an AC repair at the height of summer. The service will cost less than a call out for an AC repair, so it makes good financial sense.
Signs Your Unit Needs an AC Repair or Replacement
Your Unit Is Getting Old
As your air conditioner gets older it becomes less efficient and more expensive to run. It is prone to more breakdowns and provides less and less cool air. Your model may no longer be made, and it may be difficult to source replacement parts. If it uses Freon (R22) as a coolant this too will become increasingly difficult to obtain as it is no longer made in the USA.
It is probably a good time to think about a replacement, although this will not be cheap, a new installation will pay for itself over time by costing less to run. We at One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating of Dallas are happy to help you decide what unit best suits your needs and budget.
It Costs More to Run
An AC repair service will help prolong the life of an air conditioner but wear and tear will reduce the efficiency of each component, such as the compressor. This means that the components must work harder to maintain the temperature inside your home. In doing so it uses more energy and your utility bills go up. Harder working units are more likely to break down needing an AC repair.
Your Unit Is Short-Cycling
Usually, an air conditioner has about three cooling cycles every hour, with the compressor working for ten minutes and then shutting off for a further ten. If your unit shuts off before it completes the cycle, you may have a problem with dirty air filters, frozen evaporator coils, and reduced coolant levels. These issues are dealt with during a regular service but if ignored will lead to an AC repair.
Reduced Cooling Effects from Your Unit
Each air conditioner requires an optimum amount of coolant in it to work properly. Low levels of coolant will mean less cooling effect from your unit. Without enough coolant, less heat will be extracted from the warm air blown over the evaporator coils and so less cool air will be blown back into your home.
Humidity Levels Are Higher
One side effect of the reduced cooling effect is that the humidity levels in your home will increase. This is because warm air contains more moisture than colder air. When the heat is extracted from the warm air so is the moisture. A tell-tell sign of this issue is water on the inside of your windows and glass doors.
Frost and Ice on the Evaporator Coils
Without enough warm air being blown over the evaporator coils or a lack of coolant, you may start to see frost and ice start to form on the coils. If this problem is not dealt with, the coils could eventually freeze over. As a consequence, you will have to turn the air conditioner off to allow them to thaw. Your unit could be out of action for up to 24 hours (or more) while this happens. If the coils freeze over too often, you will eventually need an AC repair or a new unit.
Faulty Fan
A faulty fan will also restrict the airflow over the evaporator coils. A problem with the fan is usually signaled by odd noises coming from your air conditioner. If the fan belt or bearings are worn out, you will start to hear grinding or squealing sounds. A loose or bent blade could hit the inside of your unit and produce loud banging sounds. If you hear any strange noises coming from your unit, you should call One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating of Dallas before too much damage can be done to your air conditioner.
Puddles of Water on the Floor
A loose water connection or a faulty water valve could be the cause of any water on the floor around your air conditioner. But the most likely explanation is that the drain pan has overflowed. Any moisture released from the warm air is collected in the drain pan, and it then flows outside your home through the AC drain line.
If either of these is blocked for any reason the water will overflow the drain pan into your unit and then onto the floor. This water could cause a short, meaning that you would need an AC repair. If near electrical outlets this situation could also cause electrical issues and require immediate assistance from professionals.
The Condenser and Cooling Fins Need Cleaning
Once the coolant has absorbed the heat from the warm air blown over the air conditioner, it is pumped outside and passes through the condenser and cooling fins. At this point, the heat is radiated to the outside air. As they are located outside the condenser and cooling fins will get covered in dirt.
This filth acts as an insulating layer and reduces the rate at which heat is transferred to the outside air. Moss and weeds can also grow on the condenser and cooling fin and this will impede the air from being blown over them by the fan.
Any dirt and weeds need to be removed to allow them to work effectively, and if not could cause the condenser to burn out and need a repair. Cleaning the condenser and cooling fins is part of a service from One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating of Dallas.
